domestic help!
okay. don't laugh. but i need laundry help. my freaking khakis only last 6 months or so before they start fraying around the cuffs like crazy. my mom could wash the same pair of pants and 5 years later they'd still look new. me? i'm cutting them off and turning them into shorts in 6 months. i'm a 33 year old man. i wear my pants up around my waist like they should be, they don't drag on the ground when i walk. i suppose when i'm driving they might drag on the floor of the car, but that shouldn't be enough to cause the fraying. ideas?

Cold water dear. And try separating your whites from your darks. Oh yeah...and maybe they need to be air dried?
All else fails try changing soap. My personal favorite is from Restoration Hardware. It's pricey but worth it.

law girl. thanks. i am doing the cold water thing now, and i've switch soaps some, but i keep coming back to tide, mainly because of the scent. powder/liquid doesn't seem to make a difference and neither did switching brands the times i've tried. i haven't been in a restoration hardware in awhile (not since they got rid of some of the fun toys and gadgets from yesteryear. this will give me a good excuse to go visit). and who knows, if i get a house, i might try to line dry.
thanks. :) believe it or not, i'm halfway domestic. mom just hasn't shared any of her secrets. all the cooking and cleaning i've learned i've had to figure out on my own.
My mom was never very domestic. I kind of had to figure it out on my own too.
I had another thought (and no it didn't hurt) it could be from starch and ironing. If you use too much starch on your pants it will cause the folds to fray. I know you're prior military...and if you're used to having the pants that will stand by themselves in the corner...it won't work with khakis.
You can now prove your domestication by making dinner. ;-)
Have you checked the hem? If it starts to come undone the pants will unravel...just re-press with an iron along the fold and a quick "whip stitch" should do the trick. If the hem is good- the pants shouldn't fray.

Thanks for the tip bslawg. Perhaps, I can keep Loki's pants from doing the same...
You could also try buying several pairs of khakis, instead of wearing the same pair every day for six months. If you bought two pairs, for example, they'd both last a year! :)
